Hands-on with the two MoP dial Fifty Fathoms 5007

Blancpain recently introduced the new 38mm Fifty Fathoms 5007 collection with two stunning no date versions featuring Mother-of-pearl dials going first. I now had the opportunity to handle both for a short while (unfortunately not under bright natural light) and capture them for the blog, so here we go up close and personal with the gold/black reference 5007 3644A B64B and the titanium/pink reference 5007 12B44R NAFA.

Two fresh looks for the classic Fifty Fathoms

Prior to launching the established configurations for the new 38mm Fifty Fathoms 5007 Blancpain introduced these two new aesthetic choices with subtle and refined Mother-of-pearl dials. One offering an understated, noble expression with a polished red gold case and a smoky black dial, the other presenting a playful character with different shades of pink.

Both watches come on a variety of strap options, the red gold version is available on Tropic or Sailcloth strap with either tang or deployant buckle as well as on Nato strap with tang buckle. The pink titanium comes on a striped two piece Nato strap with tang buckle or a grade 23 titanium bracelet.

Red gold and black

The centrepiece of this Fifty Fathoms 5007 is the very unusual MoP dial, executed in a way not seen before. It has a smoky, somewhat mysterious character with its dégradé effect, which is immensely difficult to really capture in photos.

The dial exposes different expressions under different light conditions, the typical MoP effect being very subtle and sometimes hardly noticeable. It would be almost sinful to cut such a dial for a date window, so Blancpain decided to make this beauty a time only watch.

The 18ct polished red gold case frames the face of the watch perfectly. With the well known curved shapes the typical Fifty Fathoms case has been truthfully transferred to the new size with 38.2mm in diameter and only 12mm in height. The lug space measures 19mm.

The watch is powered by caliber 1153 with 100 hours of power reserve, finished in the typical style we already know from the Fifty Fathoms 5010.

The black Tropic strap is a very nice choice for this timepiece, especially with the solid red gold deployant clasp which helps to achieve a perfect weight balance on the wrist.

Titanium and pink

Some of you may remember that there was a 45mm Fifty Fathoms with a MoP dial and pink numerals around 2008/2009, the color concept however was not that pronounced as we see it with this new Fifty Fathoms. For the first time we now have an all pink bezel and pink SuperLuminova used for the hands, too.

The white MoP dial works perfectly with the pink highlights, again the dial is executed in a refined, subtle way, The focus is clearly drawn towards the bright pink numerals, indices and hands, giving the watch a very playful character.

The satin brushed grade 23 titanium case contrasts quite strongly with the bright color concept, it visually appears darker than for instance with the traditional blue dial version.

Of course this timepiece also features caliber 1153, visible through a sapphire case back, the movement is again finished in the typical Fifty Fathoms style.

Conclusions

Blancpain introduced both watches under the slogan „Fifty Fathoms, Her Way”, addressing both versions to women. For the playful pink Fifty Fathoms this is an obvious direction, especially on the Nato strap with pink stripes.

The red gold version however may appeal strongly to men with slimmer wrists, too. The MoP dial is so discreet, the overall configuration so intriguing, that I personally would not hesitate to wear this timepiece myself.

These two versions of the Fifty Fathoms 5007 offer new aesthetic choices, one bold and colorful, the other offering a sophisticated yet subtle luxurious character. And these versions show that the well known design of the Fifty Fathoms works perfectly in most different configurations.

You find these two Fifty Fathoms 5007 here on the Blancpain website. My overview on the entire FF 5007 collection can be found here, my hands-on with the stainless steel version on bracelet and the titanium blue dial 5007 on Tropic here in the blog.

I hope enjoyed this introduction and the photos.

Cheers

Henrik
