Flashback: the Leman GMT Reveil East Coast Jewelry

During the first decade of the 21st century Blancpain made numerous special editions for some authorized dealers, predominantly within the Leman line and many of them in the USA. Here’s a very rare one, the 2006 20th Anniversary Leman GMT Reveil for the South Florida dealer East Coast Jewelry.

.

The Leman GMT Reveil

Introduced in 2004, reference 2041 was the second Leman in the new 40mm size, following the 2003 Flyback Split Second 2086.

This highly complicated and very practical timepiece was the sporty, casual sibling to Breguet‘s Reveil Du Tsar, which also featured the same configuration and movement developed by the Manufacture Blancpain after the assimilation of Frederic Piguet.

.

With 407 parts caliber 1241 is offering a lot: beating at 4Hz it offers 45 hours of power reserve at a height of only 6.2mm. It features a GMT function with an independently adjustable hour hand which also moves the date disc forward and backwards. These functions plus winding the barrels for time and alarm are set by the crown at 2.

And then there’s of course the alarm function: displayed on a large subdial it is set by the crown at 4 and activated by the pusher at 8 and displayed on the dial below 12. Notably the automatic winding is also building the alarm power reserve, which is displayed on the dial between 10 and 12.

.

The finish of caliber 1241 is immaculate with Geneva stripes and polished bevels, heat blued screws, an 18ct gold rotor and the beautiful black polished hammer for the alarm.

.

The hammer does not hit the inner case like with most alarm watches but a circular gong on the outer rim of the movement, just like you know it from minute repeaters.

The Anniversary version for East Coast Jewelry

There have been two notable limited versions of the Leman GMT Reveil made for US dealers: the third A’Toute Vitesse from 2007 with 12 pieces and the subject of this blog essay from 2006 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of South Florida dealer East Coast Jewelry with 20 watches.

.

Other than the ATV the ECJ edition went all way and (in addition to the timepiece specifics) came with a unique box and a unique strap.

With the GMT Reveil 2041B-1130M it’s all about the color code of East Coast Jewelry: black and bright yellow. The wooden box exhibits these colors in a beautiful fashion, and luckily the soft lack interior hasn’t deteriorated totally over time, yet it shows some early signs of it.

.

The black rubber strap on the single deployant strap features yellow stitching and sits tight to the case, a style that no longer exists with Blancpain OEM straps.

.

But now let’s turn to the face of the Leman GMT Reveil ECJ: the black lacquered finish of the multi layer dial hasn’t changed compared to the standard 2041, the numerals and indices however are executed in bright yellow, as is the print on the date disc.

.

The use of yellow goes a step further with all hands being lacquered in that color, too. Notably the hand sockets are still done in polished steel.

.

The clarity of the dial is enhanced by the double AR coated domed crystal. Typical for the time is the blue hue of the outer AR coating.

.

On the wrist

With 40mm in diameter and only 13.3mm in height the Leman GMT Reveil 2041 is a pleasure to wear on smaller and larger wrists.

The case hugging strap style makes it a bit less comfortable for very slim wrists, though.

.

Conclusions

The East Coast Jewelry 2041 is no doubt an eye-catcher with its black and yellow colors. This dial however encourages to take the watch off the wrist and explore it with a loupe to really appreciate this unique combination of extrovert colors and brilliant refinement in every detail.

.

These days the GMT Reveil can only be found in the Villeret line, here you can explore it on the Blancpain website and here you find my blog essay on it.

Part three of my Leman anthology dealing with limited editions can be found here in the blog. An example for above mentioned A‘Toute Vitesse limited editions is featured here in the blog.

I hope you enjoyed this Flashback essay and the photos.

Cheers
